A Trek Up Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain may not be Mount Everest, but it certainly has something to offer those in the Marquette area. Honestly, I could have sat up there all day, admiring the view. Miles and mile of forest in one direction, Lake Superior 470 feet below in another. This 360 view of the Marquette area is pretty breath-taking, and I don’t say that a lot about views.

The trek up the ‘mountain’ really isn’t very difficult at all (3,200 feet), in my opinion.  Even the difficult route. It’s steep, yes, but we were able to do it after hiking the two days before. The stairs are the real killer. The Mining Journal claims there are 304 stairs to the top, after (at least the difficult route) climbing steep, rocky terrain. The view is totally worth it. And more.

Once you arrive at the top, there are three viewing decks. One faces Lake Superior and Presque Isle Park, another faces more towards Marquette and the third faces away from the lake, towards Huron Mountain range.

Getting There

Sugarloaf Mountain is located on CR550, about seven miles north of the Marquette, on your way to Big Bay.
