Camp Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a well-known gem in the state of Michigan. However, what most people don’t know is that the park offers so much more than just this famous waterfall. Consisting of nearly 50,000 acres, Tahquamenon Falls State Park is home to multiple campgrounds and miles of scenic woodland trails.

Visitors staying at the park can choose from three campgrounds. The Lower Falls Campground, Rivermouth Campground, and the Rivermouth Pines Campground. We stayed at the Lower Falls Campground.

The Lower Falls Campground is modern and made up for two loops; Hemlock and Portage.

The Hemlock loop is one of the few state campgrounds in Michigan that is open all year. If you’re looking for sites with more shade or for hammocking, the Hemlock loop is a great option. It also has easy access to the state park’s hiking trail system. This is where we stayed.

The Portage loop is a bit less shady but still offers plenty of trees to enjoy. It has access to the North Country Trail and some of the sites have views of the river.

All sites within the Lower Falls have at least 30-amp electrical service.

In addition to the three campgrounds, Tahquamenon Falls State Park also offers backcountry camping and has a lodge and camper cabin to rent.

What We Liked

We were very surprised at how large our campsite was. I don’t recall us ever staying anywhere else with that much room. We were able to comfortably fit a vehicle and a truck camper, with plenty of extra space.

The campground is beautiful and very clean. Despite being a modern campground, it still manages to hold onto that “in the middle of the woods” feeling.

It is away from the crowds but still just a short drive away from the waterfalls.

What We Didn’t Like

Despite the sites being very large, there wasn’t much privacy between the sites.
