Tahquamenon Falls is the perfect representation of the beauty to be found in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A popular tourist destination for reasons obvious to any visitor. As a staple of Michigan, this waterfall should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Upper Falls
Tahquamenon’s upper fall is one of the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi. It is nearly 50 feet tall and more than 200 feet wide. Boasting 50,000 gallons of water per SECOND, it is exactly what people think of when they imagine a roaring falls.
The brown tinge, caused by tannis leached from the cedar swamps surround the river, has earned this waterfall the nickname “Root Beer Falls.” However, there is a Root Beer Falls located in the western portion of the U.P.
Lower Falls
Four miles downstream is the Lower Falls. Although much smaller, but nonetheless as beautiful as the Upper Falls. The 5 small drops surround an island that park visitors can access by renting a row boat.
The Brewery
Located at the Upper Falls, the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub offers a unique experience to visitors from all over the world. If you have the time, we highly recommend stopping in for a bite to eat. Great food and a fantastic atmosphere.
Tahquamenon State Park
Including the waterfalls, Tahquamenon State Park stretches over 13 miles and contains close to 50,000 acres. It offers a variety of outdoor experiences, including year round camping and hiking. In the winter, lantern lit snowshoe hikes are offered, making this park perfect for any season.
When I first visited the falls, I was a little girl on a trip with my family. I was so excited about everything I saw and the memories have stuck with me through the years.
When Steve and I returned, we fell in love with this stunning waterfall. However, over the last few years it has became a major tourist spot. In the summer time, the crowds can be overwhelming.
For a magical experience, our favorite time to visit Tahquamenon Falls is the winter. Lacking in crowds, it is much quieter and much more peaceful.
