Hiking the Tranquil Penosha Trail in Brighton Recreation Area

The Penosha Trail in Brighton Recreation area winding its way through forest

There is a special kind of magic in exploring a new trail, and the Penosha Trail in Brighton Recreation Area definitely delivers.

If you’re like me and seek out those quieter corners of nature, this trail is a must-explore. Prepare for a peaceful wander through deep woods, sparkling lakes and ponds, and bursts of color from wildflowers along the way.

The Penosha Trail Experience

The Penosha Trail is a 5-mile loop trail that begins at the Bishop Lake Day Use Area. The trail features an oak prairie, kettle ponds, and plenty of up-and-down terrain.

The Michigan DNR claims this trail features “more difficult terrain,” but I thought it wasn’t bad. There were some roots and rocks along the way, and lots of hills to keep things interesting but nothing that was too challenging.

In early May, when I explored the trails, there weren’t any mosquitoes and the wildflowers had just started to bloom in some areas along the trail. One of my favorite aspects of spring hiking is to see all those beautiful, bursts of color for the various wildflowers.

Looking for a longer hike? The Penosha trail can be connected to additional trails in the area for a longer hiking experience.

Tips for the Hike

Before you go, make sure you have a Michigan State Park pass or be prepared to buy one when you arrive.

While this trail is fairly well marked, it is always a good idea to have a plan ahead of time. Either download a map on your phone in case you don’t have service or grab a paper one.

Stick to the blue markers to stay on the Penosha trail.

Have fun! This is a great trail for hikers and trail runners. It is easy to access, not too challenging, and not too long if you’re just starting out.
