Winter in Michigan is a magical time of year. The landscape transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland. This bucket list will guide you on your journey of discovery, helping you embrace the cold and uncover the hidden gems and unforgettable experiences that make Michigan winters truly special.
Visit the Eben Ice Caves in Eben Junction
The Eben Ice Caves have become a staple in winter adventures. Once a hidden gem in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, it is a popular location offering visitors a full experience. Grab a hot chocolate at the trailhead, put on your ice cleats, and take a 0.75-mile hike through woods to the sixty-foot-tall icicles.
Tips for Visiting
- Best time to go is January & February
- Ice cleats will help make your experience more enjoyable and safe
- Layer up with warm, waterproof clothing
- Grab some snowshoes if there’s significant snowfall to make the hike easier
- Remember to follow Leave No Trace and minimize your impact to the area.
Experience Winter Camping
Wake up in the cold, brisk air and get warm and toasty by the fire during a winter camping trip. Whether you’re dispersed camping in a tent or staying in a Yurt or cabin, it is an incredible experience.
For those seeking established camping options, numerous Michigan State Parks and State Forest Campgrounds remain open throughout the winter, offering a great base camp for exploring the snowy landscape.
Avid adventures can embrace the true spirit of winter by dispersed camping in a National Park or National Forest, or they can even go backpacking.
For a full list of State Park Campgrounds that are open all year, visit the 2024 Michigan State Park Campground Schedule. Keep in mind that while a campground may be open, it may not offer all of the amenities that are available during the summer.
Tips for Winter Camping
- Invest in a high-quality, waterproof tent and pack waterproof outwear – staying dry is key
- Get a sleeping bag that is rated for temperatures significantly colder than you expect
- Use a sleeping pad for additional insulation between you and the ground – air beds can create more coolness below you and aren’t a good option
- Monitor the weather conditions
- Pack extra food
- Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Take a Winter Rafting
Venture beyond the ordinary and experience the thrill of winter rafting on one of Michigan’s stunning waterways. Several companies throughout the state offer guided tours, allowing you to see the serene beauty of Michian’s rivers in a way you never have before.
Here are a few companies to check out:
- Big Bear Adventures, Indian River, MI
- Jordan Valley Outfitters, East Jordon, MI

Tips for Winter Paddling
- Check with the company before arriving for any suggestions they have of gear to bring
- Layer up with a waterproof layer to help keep you dry and warm
- Bring extra clothes for post-trip
Watch a Dog Sled Race
Become a spectator (or participant) in one of Marquette County’s Sled Dog races. Experiencing the UP200 Sled Dog race is an exhilarating adventure that will stay with you long after the last dog has crossed the finish line.
This event consists of three races over different distances and occurs annually in February.
- The UP200 (228)

Escape the summer crowds and discover the enchanting beauty of Michigan’s waterfalls in winter. Witness the dramatic transformation as these natural wonders become works of art. Some waterfalls become massive towers of hollow ice while others emerge from a blanket of snow, creating breathtaking scenes.

Visit a Frozen Beach
Michigan beaches, renowned for their soft sand and vibrant summer life, undergo a magical transformation during the winter months. The crystal-clear waters give way to a serene, snow-covered landscape.
But the winter magic doesn’t stop there. Along the coastline, lighthouses become wind-sculpted ice sculptures. Explore these icy masterpieces and experience the unique tranquility of Michigan’s winter wonderland.
Tips for Visiting Beaches and Lighthouses
- Best time to visit is February
- Don’t climb on the ice formations along the coast – this ice may be in thin in places and people have fallen through
