As the crisp air of autumn sweeps across Marquette, Michigan, there’s no better time to lace up the hiking boots and head to Sugarloaf Mountain. This local gem offers breathtaking views, vibrant foliage, and a sense of tranquility that’s perfect for anyone looking to connect with nature.
There’s just something special about hiking Sugarloaf in the fall. It is an experience that you won’t want to miss.
The Trail Experience
The hike up Sugarloaf Mountain is about 1.5 miles round trip. There are two options – a hard route and an easy route. We opted for the easy route this time around.
The trail on the easy route is well-maintained and well-marked. However, prepare for lots of stairs. And I mean a lot of stairs. There are between 270 and 300 stairs to reach the top of the mountain.
Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views. On one side, we enjoyed the vast expanse of Lake Superior and the city of Marquette nestled beside it. On the other side, are the rolling hills and vibrant colors of the Huron Mountains. It is the perfect spot to soak in the beauty.
Despite having hiked Sugarloaf numerous times in every season, the view still surprises me once I reach the top of those stairs and take in the view.
Tips for the Hike
As with any fall hike, remember to dress in layers. Fall weather can be unpredictable. On this particular trip, it was extremely windy at the summit and we were very grateful to have our jackets with us.
Follow Leave No Trace. Stay on the marked trails, pack out what you pack in, and be mindful of any wildlife you encounter.
Plan to hike earlier in the day to avoid the crowds. There is plenty of parking available but the trails can get a bit busy during the peak of the day.
