Hocking Hills State Park is well known for its caves. But did you know that there is actually only one true cave within the park? That’s the Rock House.
The Rock House cave is about 200 feet long and 20 to 30 feet wide with a high ceiling of 25 feet. It sits midway up a 150-foot cliff made of Blackhand sandstone and is quite the sight to see up close.
Upon entering the cave, it is clear how it received its name. With seven beautifully arched “windows”, and great sandstone columns, it feels very much like a house.
We went on this hike in the afternoon and while it isn’t the most popular area in Hocking Hills State Park, there were still plenty of people there. It made it hard to navigate the narrow pathway around the cliff and was hard to move around in the Rock House to view the spectacular cave. It might be another one to aim for visiting earlier in the day but be prepared with a headlamp. The cave will probably be very dark in the early hours of the day.
The overall hike is about 0.25 miles and is relatively easy. There are some sections closer to the house itself that are narrow along the cliff face. It is one you’ll want to watch your footing and keep kids away from the edge.
