A Spooktacular Event: The Dansville Halloween 5K

I love running in the fall. There is more joy in it for me than any other season. To support that love of the season, I try to squeeze in as many races as possible.

This year I decided to sign up for a Halloween-themed race and that race was the Dansville Halloween 5K.

I chose this race not because the course sounded particularly interesting or because the goodies were enticing (although they were). I chose it because Dansville is my dad’s hometown.

I have so many good memories there. Family getting together for Memorial Day. Watching the parade and grilling out at grandma’s house. Running around the backyard (and the town) with my cousins.

Grand Thanksgiving and Christmas meals in grandma’s dining room. Afterward, the aunts would help clean up and chat away in the kitchen while the uncles gathered in the living room to watch football.

I chose the Dansville Halloween 5K because of family. From the memories I have growing up to running a race on the roads that my dad trained on when he was in cross country. It all came down to family.

The Dansville Halloween 5K/3K Course

There were two distance options for this race. The 5K, that I participated in, and the 3K. The route for both races was the same with the turnaround points being different.

This was an out-and-back race that began and finished at the Dansville High School. The route took participants out of town and onto country roads.

Overall the course was an easy one. Very flat and very fast, with one small hill toward the 1.5 mile mark. The local firefighter department was out on the course, blocking traffic and helping direct participants. Additional volunteers were situated at the turnaround points.

There was no way anyone could get lost on this course. It was simple and easy to follow with zero room for error.

Costumes were encouraged and there were some pretty neat ones. Some of my favorites were a T-Rex, a Viking, a Banana, and a girl dressed in a poodle skirt.

The Goodies

Everyone who signed up received a t-shirt and a hand-painted gourd. I particularly enjoyed the gourd.

All finishers received a cookie rather than a finisher medal. The cookies were sugar cookies shaped like pumpkins. I ate mine before I took a photo.

Amie at Dansville 5K

Age group winners received a Dansville-branded pint glass full of Halloween candy (not the good stuff).

I’m not certain but I think the overall winners received a pie.

This was certainly a race with unique goodies. Very on point with the Halloween theme.

Overall

The Dansville 5K is an excellent race for someone looking for a small, fun Halloween race that is fast and flat. It had great energy with lots of support from other participants.
