Gear Review: Salomon Adv 5 Skin Hydration Vest

Finding what method of carrying water and food on a long run (or even a day hike) can be a challenge. You want something that is light, versatile and fits your style comfortably.

For me, that is the Salmon 5 Skin Hydration Vest.

My Criteria

When I started my journey into hydration, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted. I really liked, especially in training runs, to not have to rely on others. Despite the sloshy noise that often accompanies it, I was happy carrying a hydration bladder.

As I moved into longer races, I found that the hydration flasks worked more efficiently for re-filling than bladders, and my crew could easily switch them out with new flasks at aid stations.

I also wanted something that could easily carry all the food I needed for a long run and a little extra room to pack a rain jacket.

What I Like

On paper, the Salmon Adv 5 Skin Hydration Vest covers everything that I’m looking for in a hydration system.

The option for the hydration bladder makes it much easier to go on long runs without having to make pitstops or find someone who is willing to refill my water/fluids.

The number of pockets and the convenience of where they are located. I usually carry a variety of foods (applesauce, honeystinger chews, honeystinger waffles, pretzels, etc) and the pocket locations make it easy to get these items out without having to stop.

The low back pocket is ideal for a rain jacket. It is easy to get a lightweight jacket in and out of that pocket without having to stop. The pocket runs along the entire lower back portion of the vest, with access points on either side.

The fit doesn’t put pressure on my shoulders and cause fatigue like some of the other hydration options I’ve tried in the past.

It easily fits under a top layer or rain jacket. No need to take it off to adjust layers while on the go.

What I Don’t Like

The vest can get hot in the warmer months.

Cleaning instructions are handwash only.

Some of the seems of the stretch pockets have begun to show some wear after a year of gentle use.

Sometimes the flasks can be hard to get back in the front pockets. I’ve found switching to a hard bottom flask works a bit better than the ones that come with the vest.

Overall

I’m really happy with my Salomon Adv Skin 5 Hydration Vest. It offers me all the support I was looking for while providing comfort that has lasted through even my longest run. It moves with my body and its easy-of-access pockets help keep me moving.

The 5-liter size is perfect for me. There are larger sizes of the same vest style available, however, for those longer distance needs.
