A Beautiful Hike at the Huron County Nature Center

Take a short hike through an oasis of woods and wetland in Michigan’s tip of the Thumb. The Huron Nature Center is a beautiful, peaceful place with easy hiking for all ages.

Visitors can experience a “rare dune-and-swale ecosystem”. In one section, red oak, jack pine, and aspens tower above. Hikers then descend into a “moist forest” where they can encounter five species of ferns (my favorite), flowering dogwood, trailing arbutus, trillium, and a special treat of lady slippers orchids.

With few roots and hills, this trail system is perfect for all hiking levels and ages.

Consisting of multiple loops, hikers can adjust their length accordingly. Hike the whole thing or pick and choose a loop or two.

Boardwalk

There wasn’t a specific portion of the trail that stood out to me as a favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed everything. From the towering trees to the vernal pond. The nature center is a beautiful little gem, tucked away in an unlikely location.
