The Hippity Hop 5K has become an annual tradition for me. This was my fourth year participating. This year was especially challenging as severe flooding made it impossible to follow the typical route, which ended up being a blessing.
The Hippity Hop 5K had nearly 700 participants this year – over 300 more than last year. This was one of the largest races I’ve attended in a long time. It is a flat and fast route and for me, kicks of the spring seasons of racing.
In addition to the 5K, the Easter Bunny made its usual appearance and the kids under 12 pre-race Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success.
Along with an extremely cute finisher’s medal and t-shirt, 5K participants also received a special complimentary pass with their bib to Potter Park Zoo. This is one of my favorite parts of participating in this race.
The Course
Typically the course would begin at Potter Park Zoo and follow along the Lansing River Trail for 1.55 miles before turning around and running back to the zoo.
This year, however, massive flooding left many areas of the river trail underwater. And not just a little bit of water.
Instead, the course started at Potter Park Zoo and took participants through a nearby neighborhood. Less scenic but considering the number of people participating, the wide streets were much easier to navigate than the narrow trail.
Both versions of the course are flat and fast, making this a great race for setting a PR.
The Child Benefit Fund
Proceeds from this event go to The Child Benefit Fund. This organization works with local at-risk youth and families. The funds help provide clothing, pay for sports fees, camp costs, emergency needs, and holiday gifts for approximately 300 children each year.
Overall
This was my 4th year participating in the Hippity Hop 5K. Unfortunately, due to the number of people who participated, I’m not certain I will be returning. While this year it worked out okay, putting that many people on the narrow Lansing River Trail makes it difficult to move and stay at a pace that you feel comfortable with.
However, if you’re looking for a more relaxed race or if you’re a head of the pack kind of runner, this is a fun and unique race with the added bonus of visiting the zoo.
