Discovering Beckwith Nature Preserve

If you’re looking for a quick, easy hike, Beckwith Nature Preserve is the place for you. This little trail system provides an escape to nature all with the convenience of being tucked away on the edge of town.

Beckwith Nature Preserve is made up of 30 acres and is located in Stockbridge, Michigan. Originally owned by the Beckwith family, it was donated to the Legacy Land Conservancy in 1999.

Today the preserve offers 1.3 miles of hiking trail through a surprisingly diverse landscape. Hikers wander through a mature pine and spruce plantation, a young oak-hickory forest, and along 800 feet of Portage Creek.

The mature pine and spruce plantation was my favorite part of the hike. Any day I get to spend immersed in old trees is a good day.

This is a very easy hike with little to no roots and rocks. It makes for a very peaceful walk in the woods for all levels of hikers.

Want more mileage? The Beckwith Nature Preserve trail connects to the Mike Levine Lakelands Trail. This trail system adds an additional 34 miles of pathway and stretches between Ingham and Livingston counties. It is a multi-use trail, made up of a mix of paved, gravel, and wooded surfaces. It also connects directly to the Pinckney Recreation Area equestrian trails.

Overall

With this being a smaller trail system, I really didn’t know what to expect. I was happily surprised. Because it is close to houses, some areas lack that “alone in the deep woods” feeling that some people strive for. But overall it was very quiet and peaceful. I enjoyed exploring this trail.
