Finding a local 5K trail race is quite the feat. Most races in this area stick to the pavement. Dragons in the Woods is one of the few exceptions. It is 100% a trail race and takes place on one of my frequent stomping grounds – Birchfield Park.
The Course
Here in lies the major problem with this year’s race – the course. The race director altered the course from last year and accidentally cut off an entire mile. That’s kind of a big deal, especially in a 5K. Instead of being 3.1 miles, the race was only 2 miles.
Oops.
Aside from that significant issue, the course was beautiful. Set in mid-October, some of the fall colors were popping along the trail. A small portion of the course stuck to the River Trail and provided lovely views of the Grand River.
The terrain has a few small hills, enough to keep things interesting but not challenging. There were also roots and rocks in some places where I had to mind my footing but again, nothing extremely challenging.
Goodies
All participants received a long sleeve tech shirt. I appreciate getting these shirts over the typical cotton t-shirt. They make great running apparel for future runs.
If Dragons in the Woods being a trail run isn’t enough motivation to sign up, then the awards should be. Overall winners (male/female) and masters (male/female) get these amazing wooden dragons.
The top 3 finishes for each age group (male/female in 5 year increments) get these beautifully designed pint glasses.
Overall
Dragons in the Woods 5K is a small race with fewer than 100 participants. It is 100% a trail race, with only a tiny bit of pavement right at the finish line. It is a fall race with beautiful fall colors on a crisp, cool morning.
With all of those reasons, how could I not return to participate again? Hopefully next year the course issue will be resolved though.
