Exploring the Powell Township Recreation Area

From the first time I heard about the Powell Township Recreation trails, I could not wait to step foot on them. Located in one of my favorite locations, Marquette County, this trail system has a lot to offer. As part of the Noquemanon Trail Network, it does not disappoint.

The Powell Township Recreation Area trails consist of 5 miles of scenic trail broken into 3 loops of varying difficulty. The trails are open to mountain bikes, hikers, trail runners, and in the winter, snowshoers. Skiiers are also welcomed but the trails are not groomed.

Powell Peak

I love how challenging the Powell Peak route is. With nearly 200 feet of elevation climb over 0.7 miles, it offers a good balance of rocky terrain and climbs without being overwhelmingly hard

And then there are the views. With access to rock bluffs, the views include the Huron Mountains, Lake Superior, and Lake Independence. These stunning views are the ultimate reason why I love running Powell Peak.

Sweet Pine

The easiest and longest loop at Powell Township Recreation Area is Sweet Pine.

Sweet Pine is 2.1 miles in length and includes 221 feet of elevation climb. While overall that is more than Powell Peak, it is stretched over a much longer distance. I still feel the climb but it is not as intense.

Moderate in difficulty, Sweet Pine still offers a challenge to those seeking it. It is not as technical as Powell Peak but there are roots, rocks, and plenty of ups and downs to keep things interesting.

As a trail runner, I thoroughly this route for coasting through my miles.

Hop on the Ladyslipper from Sweet Pine to extend your adventure. Ladyslipper offers an additional 0.9 easy miles, similar to those of Sweet Pine.

Expert Loop

An additional trail labeled “For Experts Only” can be found branching off of Powell Peak near the rock bluffs. The sign recommends taking a different route for those who are not experts. I have not taken this route yet but am looking forward to giving it try on a return trip.

Powell Township Recreation Area Overall

I am in love with the Powell Township Recreation Area trails.

The views are stunning, the terrain is challenging without being overwhelming, and the loops make it easy to get in longer miles.

I cannot wait to return to these trails and look forward to spending many more hours exploring them.
