A Hippity Hop 5K

The Hippity Hop 5K celebrated its 6th year with over 450 participants. Along with the 5K, the Easter Bunny made an appearance, and kids under 12 participated in a pre-race Easter Egg Hunt.

Participants received a special complimentary pass with their bib to access one of Lansing’s local attractions after the race; Potter Park Zoo.

The Course

This is a paved 5K that is flat and fast. Beginning at Potter Park Zoo, participants followed the Lansing River Trail for 1.55 miles before turning around and running back to the zoo.

The most notable “hill” along this route is the bridge at the start/finish where the trail crosses above a road.

The course was very well marked and there were volunteers along the way, cheering on participants. There were no road crossings along this route, which I really liked.

Goodies & Cost

For $25, participants not only got to run a fun 5K, but also received a cute t-shirt and a finisher’s medal.

I already mentioned the additional bonus that is unique to this race. After the 5K, bibs turn into a complimentary pass to Potter Park Zoo. It has been years since I visited the zoo but it has a special place in my heart as I worked there in their teen volunteer program for many years. It was a wonderful treat.

Additional awards were given to those who placed in the top 3 of their age group.

The Child Benefit Fund

Proceeds from this event go to The Child Benefit Fund. This organization works with local at-risk youth and families. The funds help provide clothing, pay for sports fees, camp costs, emergency needs, and holiday gifts for approximately 300 children per year.

It is one of the many great causes out there.

Overall

This was my 3rd year participating in the Hippity Hop 5K and has been by the far the best turnout I have seen. It also was one of the more unique 5Ks I have had the pleasure of running because of its added bonus for the zoo.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to running it again in the future.
