A Unique Wildlife Experience: W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

I love birds and if you’re like me, the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is one place you’ll want to visit. Located in Augusta, Michigan, this bird sanctuary gives visitors the opportunity to get close to some of Michigan’s most interesting residences.

The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is home to hundreds of waterfowl that visitors get to see in their natural habitats. Everything from the common Canadian Goose to the majestic Trumpeter Swan.

In addition to waterfowl, visitors can stop by the Birds of Prey enclosure where Bald Eagles, Red-Tailed Hawks, a variety of owls, and many other beautiful birds can be found. I love this particular area because along with admiring these birds, it is an educational stop. Visitors learn why these animals can’t be released back into the wild, mostly because of encounters with humans. One particular issue is people use mouse poison to kill mice. Mice will die outside of the house and become a meal for a bird of prey. The poison affects the bird and can lead to blindness, other health issues, and even death.

A sanctuary has a beautiful pollinator garden that encourages visitors like hummingbirds and butterflies.

Around three miles of hiking trails are open to the public. This includes a 3/4 mile of accessible trail to Wintergreen Lake where hundreds of waterfowl can be seen.

Spring is one of my favorite times to visit because of all the little ones running around. However, the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is open all four seasons.

I highly recommend a visit to W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, at least once. It is a unique wildlife center and one of my favorite places to visit.
