Gear Review: Aftershokz Aeropex Open Ear Headphones

Formally known as Aftershokz Aeropex, the newly branded Shokz OpenRun Bone Conducting Headphones are my favorite headphones on the market. Light-weight, comfortable, and with an open ear design that promotes safety in any type of environment. Whether I’m on the trail or sharing the road with cars, these headphones allow me to listen to music or podcasts while still being alert to my surroundings.

What I Like

Amie wearing Aftershokz Aeropex
Amie wearing Shokz with Sunglasses

I wore these for all of my training runs and for my 50K race. They were as comfortable on mile 30 as they were on mile 1.

Because they are lightweight, I haven’t experienced head fatigue while wearing them.

The 8-hour battery life. I have yet to run the battery down, even on long runs.

Great sound quality for music and phone calls.

The open ear design is the primary reason why I purchased these headphones. I wanted something where I could have music or podcasts on low and still hear what’s going on around me.

Easy controls to answer phone calls or music controls.

Great customer service.

What I Don’t Like

Shortly after purchase, the headphones would randomly turn off. I reached out to customer service and they replaced them quickly. They uphold their warranty. I have not had the same problem with the new set.

While the controls are easy to use, sometimes I accidentally call the last number dialed instead of switching songs. User error but still frustrating.

When used on high levels, they somethings vibrate against my jaw creating an unusual and unpleasant situation.

Overall

This is the second version of AfterShokz (now Shokz) that I’ve used and I continue to be impressed. Each version has improved from the last. I have had this pair for a while now and they have held up through hundreds of miles and hours of workout sessions.
