A Muddy Adventure to Rock River Falls

Hidden within the Rock River Wilderness Area in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a beautiful, secluded waterfall. With narrow access roads and a hiking trail that is thick with mud, just getting there is an adventure in itself. The journey to Rock River Falls is well worth it.

The Rock River Wilderness Area is part of the Hiawatha National Forest in Alger County. It consists of approximately 4,700 acres and is one of the more rugged areas of the national forest. It is home to several of the area gems, including the Eben Ice Caves.

Among these gems is Rock River Falls. Out of the many spectacular waterfalls we have visited in this area, Rock River Falls remains one of our favorites.

The route is not well marked and the road can be rough in spots, especially the last half mile. We parked early and walked into the trailhead to avoid the rough road.

The falls is found at the end of a relatively easy but very muddy 1-mile hike.

It is about 15 feet in height and is a simple, single-drop shelf waterfall that tumbles into an open pool.

I recommend a 4×4 vehicle to access this waterfall as the roads can be very narrow and rough in some places. Make sure you bring good hiking boots and walking sticks can be helpful in the more muddy areas.
