A Family-Friendly Waterfall: Horseshoe Falls

Location: Munising, Michigan

Privately owned, Horseshoe Falls is one of the many beautiful waterfalls in the city of Munising. Surrounded by ferns and moss, this picturesque waterfall is worth stopping to visit, at least once.

Because of admission cost, we have put off visiting Horseshoe Falls for a long time. With many other free waterfalls in the area, it is hard to justify paying to see one. When finally deciding to visit, I was pleasantly surprised.

Horseshoe Falls

Despite being privately owned and having a shop built around it, the owners have kept the waterfall very natural. A well-maintained pathway leads up to the waterfall and a small viewing platform is available further downstream.

Horseshoe Falls is directed more towards families and would be a great stop for young kids. The location includes:

  • Horseshoe Falls
  • Trout Pond for kids to feed the fish (and ducks)
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Botanical Garden
  • A small picnic area with tables

The cost for admission:

  • $8 for adults
  • $5 for kids 3 to 12 years old
  • Free for kids 2 & under
  • There is a discount available for military/veterans.

This waterfall is worth seeing once, especially if you have kids. It is unlikely that I would pay again to visit or recommend to those looking for waterfalls in the area. There are plenty of beautiful, impressive waterfalls that can be visited free of charge.

Getting There

From Munising, head east on M-28. Turn left onto Prospect Street and left again onto Bishop Street.

There are plenty of signs from both directions.
