A Lake Side Attraction: Elliot Falls

A small waterfall tucked away on one of Pictured Rock’s most beautiful beaches. Elliot Falls, also known as Miners Beach Falls, is an iconic waterfall of the area.

I trudged across the pristine Miners beach in hopes to catch a glimpse at this commonly photographed waterfall. It was hot and walking through deep sand made a short 0.3 mile hike feel like miles.

When I finally reached the cove where Elliot Falls was tucked away, I stopped the stairs. The Lakeshore/North Country Trail passed by the falls. The exhausting haul could have been much easier by that route.

I was initially disappointed when I spotted Elliot Falls. It was a small, simple waterfall that seems much more extravagant in the photographs. However, even in its simplicity, it is a pretty waterfall.

It tumbles over smooth sandstone layers, slowly eroding away, before sliding into Lake Superior.

While the falls itself is far from impressive, the little cove it is nestled into is beautiful. A sandstone nook carved out by Lake Superior. An iconic symbol of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore beaches that is often overlooked.

Overall I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see Elliot Falls, but if you are in the area, the cove is worth the visit. Just take the trail instead of the beach, especially on a hot summer day.
