Camping at Otter Lake Campground

Location: Munising, Michigan

Nestled within the Hiawatha National Forest, Otter Lake Campground gives campers the experience of being away from the city while still conveniently within driving distance of Munising, Michigan. With access to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Island, and a dozen waterfalls, Otter Lake Campground is a great place to get away to.

What We Liked

If you decide to spend some time in camp, Otter Lake Campground offers a variety of activities to keep you or your kids busy.

  • Paddle boat, kayak, and canoe rentals
  • Basketball court
  • A small playground for kids
  • Volleyball Court
  • Cornhole
  • Swimming

The staff are helpful and polite. We had car trouble and had to go without a vehicle for a day and a half. We were able to get transportation through Altran but the staff offered multiple times to drive us into town when the car was ready.

They even stopped by our site to check on us and see if there was anything we needed. Above and beyond.

Otter Lake

The scenery was beautiful and peaceful. Otter Lake is a calm, serene lake with a small beach area. We watched some kids catch frogs along the shoreline and heard Sandhill Cranes every morning.

The sites were nice and excellent for the price. Especially being so close to Munising, we expected to pay much more. But it was very reasonably priced.

There is an on-site laundry room and a place to wash dishes. We didn’t use the laundry room but for longer trips, this is helpful to have.

What We Didn’t Like

No fault of the campground, but it was loud. There were three groups of people who were very loud well after quiet time (11 p.m.).

The showers were clean but I didn’t like that they didn’t have locks on them. There also wasn’t a place to set things down, making it difficult when dressing and undressing.

We were a little disappointed that there was no camp store. However, there was a vending machine for drinks, which came in useful.

Some sites were not well defined. We had a good, defined line on one side of our site but not on the other. This wasn’t a problem until our neighbors sprawled out and squished us.

Conclusion

Otter Lake

Overall, Otter Lake Campground is a place I wouldn’t mind returning to in the future. It was a beautiful, clean campground that is well managed and a great value. We really appreciated the help of the staff in a stressful situation and really enjoyed our time spent at Otter Lake Campground.
