With mountains, old growth forests, and waterfalls to explore, Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park is a hiker’s paradise. It also offers a variety of camping options, including backpacking, rustic, and modern campgrounds.
Presque Isle Campground is a rustic campground within the park that offers 50 car accessible sites and 5 walk in sites. Broken into two loops, the campground offers a quiet area for non-generator camping, designed more for but not limited to, tent campers.
We had the pleasure of staying in the non-generator portion of the park. Our site was far back from the road, providing a bit more privacy from others sites.
Our favorite aspect of the campground was it’s locations. The heat index was in the low 100’s. A rarity for the area. Presque Isle Campground offered relief from these temperatures by being a short walk from Lake Superior in on direction and a short walk to Presque Isle River in the other.
There’s nothing better than the cool spray of waterfall on a really hot day. There are three stunning waterfalls on the Presque Isle River, all within a short distance from each other.
Because it is a rustic campground, the only amentities available are hand pump water and vault toilets. Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures and the fact that the vault toilets were nearly full, this was the most unpleasant experience we had during our stay and one of the worst vault toilet experience we have had.
Thankfully, we were down wind of the vault toilet, but using it was a case of hold your breath and hope for the best.
