When visiting the Porcupine Mountains highest point, Summit Peak, prepare yourself for beautiful vistas. At nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, on clear days, hikers can see the Apostle Islands to the northwest and Isle Royale to the northeast. It is well worth the easy, short hike.
During our visit, the heat index reached the 100’s. We wanted to enjoy the Porcupine Mountains State Park but were desperate to find short, beautiful hikes that we could accomplish and enjoy in the mornings before the temperatures peak. The Summit Peak Observation Tower was exactly what we were looking for.
At a 1/2 mile in length (one way), this was more like a stroll through the woods than a hike.
At the end of the trail, we were rewarded with very pretty views and a 40-foot tall tower. From the tower, we could enjoy a beautiful 360 view of the area and true to what the park claims, we could see Isle Royale and the Apostle Islands.
If you are short on time, looking for easy hikes or trying to beat the heat like we were, this is an excellent option.
