Gear Review: Hennessy SnakeSkins

I wasn’t looking for a new storage system when I came across Hennessy’s SnakeSkins. But after seeing them demonstrated, I wanted them. I have been using them for a full season now and am very happy with my decision to make them a part of my hammocking experience.

The Specs

  • Packed Weight: 2.3 oz
  • Packed Size: 6″ x 6.5″ x 0.6″
  • Dimensions: 82″ – 84″ long
  • Fabric: 30 D silnyon
  • Color: Coyote brown

The Pros

With any type of storage system, the most important aspect is protection. The Hennessy SnakeSkins provide adequate protection against damage that may occur while my hammock is packed away.

My favorite aspect of the SnakeSkins is how quickly I can put up my hammock and take it down. The Hennessy website claims that it takes about 30 seconds to collapse a hammock. I think it’s faster. All I have to do is pull the SnakeSkins down over my hammock, tucking in the rainfly. This makes setup a breeze as well. Hook up to my trees using tree safe webbing, and pull back the skins. The hammock is ready to go.

Another bonus, my hammock never touches the ground during set up.

The Cons

Unlike a traditional stuff sack, the skins can be a bit bulky in my pack. My hammock isn’t as tightly contained as it would be in a normal sack.

Because the SnakeSkins are open at the ends, they aren’t waterproofed like some other stuff sacks.

Conclusion

Overall, my SnakeSkins are a great addition to my shelter. The ease of tear down and set up make things that much easier when setting up camp.
