Located in Sequoia National Park is the world’s largest tree. Standing 275 feet tall and over 36 feet in diameter at the base, General Sherman is one impressive sight to see.
Sequoia National Park is also known as a land of giants. And it’s easy to see why. With an entire park designed around the world’s largest tree, you bet it’s going to be one of my favorite places to visit.
With only a day and a half to spend in the park, we were quite limited on what we could see. So we hit some of the highlights, including General Sherman. One cannot grasp just how large this tree is until seen in person. And even then…
Accessing General Sherman is easy. There are two trail options. The first is about a half mile and is paved with a few stairs. Along this route there are several other large Sequoias and information about the history of these trees.
The second option is for those requiring a wheelchair accessible trail. We obviously didn’t take this route.
Along with the historical information, a really neat feature was the circle area that allowed visitors to really experience how large General Sherman is around. Steve stood in the center of the bricked area, which represents the middle of General Sherman, giving us a better idea of how large this tree really is.
