Mead Creek State Forest Campground

Finding a decent campground can be a difficult task. Because so many options are out there, small campgrounds like Mead Creek can be overlooked.

Tent at night

We encountered Mead Creek in 2011 as an unplanned stop on our travels across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It is located on the outskirts of the Seney Wildlife Refuge, right on the banks of the Manistique River. Which means you will probably have some interesting wildlife encounters. We heard wolves howling all night on our visit.

There are 9 sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each one has plenty of space and the surrounding trees provide lots of privacy. Some of the sites back up to the Manistique River, providing some pretty beautiful sunsets. We arrived after dark to an empty campground and picked a site tucked into the wooded surroundings.

Amenities

Snake

In addition to the scenic forest surroundings, Mead Creek Campground includes 2 vault toilets and potable water from a well hand pump. Also, each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. It is about as rustic of a campground as one can get aside from dispersed camping.

There is accessibility to a gravel boat launch on the Manistique River, suitable for medium to small boats. To get there, you have to drive across a tiny wooden bridge over Mead Creek. We were a little apprehensive at first but the bridge did hold and made for some beautiful scenic photograph.

Overall

We very much enjoyed our stay at this secluded, small campground. It had everything that we look for when trying to find the perfect place to camp. It was quiet, scenic, and best of all, we had it to ourselves.

Getting to Mead Creek Campground

To get to Mead Creek Campground from Seney, taking M-77 South for about 9 miles. Turn right onto river road and continue for another 3.5 miles. The road will curve and turn into Floodwoods Road. After an additional 1.5 miles, take a right into Mead Creek Campground.
