Canyon Falls and the Gorge that Follows

The Sturgeon River is a 106 mile long wild, raging river with some pretty amazing waterfalls. One such waterfall is Canyon Falls, called such for a good reason.

Canyon Falls is located at a scenic rest stop on US-41, making it a fairly well known and visited waterfall. At roughly 15 feet in height and within a mile or so walking distance, its easy to see why so many people stop to see it.

However, this trip we went further (despite the rain and threat of a possible thunderstorm). Literally. The easy going trail ends at Canyon Falls but the real beauty is what lies past. The “trail” becomes rough to non existent as we made our way past massive rock structures; along towering gorges; past rumbling rapids; and ending at Upper Falls. A perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Gorges carved by swift rivers are kind of our thing, and the Sturgeon River has yet to disappoint. I, for one, am looking forward to exploring more of this wild river
