A Winter Stay at Teddy Lake Yurt

There’s something special about staying in a Yurt. It’s a unique experience that most Michiganders have yet to discover. Our first experience with one was at Teddy Lake in Michigan’s Craig Lake State Park.

Teddy Lake

The Teddy Lake Yurt is available year-round, making it a perfect winter get-away. Because it is a secluded location, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required to reach the gated parking area. In the summer season, this might not be an issue but in the winter, the road is not maintained. From the gated parking area, it about a 200-foot walk to the entrance.

The Yurt is furnished with enough bunk beds to sleep four people, proving an excellent option for small groups who want to get lost in a “winter wonderland.”  A small table with a couple of chairs is tucked cozily next to the wood burning stove. The stove provides heat and works well for cooking easy meals. A stockpile of wood that has been sheltered from rain and snow is available for use.

Woodstove

While there is no electricity or water available at the Yurt, there are vault toilets.

For $65 a night, plus the cost of a Recreational Pass if you don’t have one, this was an amazing opportunity. I imagine it’s quite pleasant in the summer as well with a canoe provided for paddling around Teddy Lake.

Getting to the Yurt

The Teddy Lake Yurt is located 7 miles North of US-41 in Craig Lake State Park, roughly 24 miles west of Ishpeming. Pick up the key and return it to Van Riper State Park.
