Gear Review: Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Poles

For ultrarunners, fastpackers, and anyone hiking challenging terrain, poles are an essential piece of equipment. The right poles reduce joint impact, boost power on ascents, and help with stabilization. I’ve used hiking poles in the past, but not for running. With my first 100 miler on the horizon, I decided that it was about time I added poles to my toolkit.

After a lot of research, I landed on the Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles. These poles have long reigned as the top choice in the trail running community. They are built for speed, efficiency, and minimal weight.

Quick Specs

  • Weight: 9.8 to 10.4 ounces
  • Material: 100% carbon fiber shafts
  • Folding Style: 3-sections fixed in length (Z-Pole)
  • Packed Length: 13-17 inches
  • Grip: Lightweight EVA Foam with Mini-Extension

Speed and Deployment

One of the things that drew me to the Black Diamond Carbon Z Poles was the quick deployment. Unlike traditional poles that you have to twist and lock, these snap into place.

Grab the grip and the first shaft section and pull. The concealed inner kelvar cord is tensioned, and the pole sections lock into place with a secure push-button click. It makes it incredibly easy to put the poles together while on the move, as well as putting them away.

I highly recommend pairing these poles with a running quiver. This addition to my vest makes it significantly easier to deploy and stow my poles without ever needing to stop running.

Ultralight Construction

The 100% carbon fiber construction minimizes the weight of the poles. Not only does this help when the poles are stowed but it also reduces the fatigue from using the poles over miles.

Zero Compromise on Comfort and Grib

The EVA foam grip is made from lightweight, moisture-wicking EVA foam. I have ran using my poles in hot, humid weather when my hands were sweaty with zero slippage and no blisters.

Not Just for Running

While running is my primary use for these poles, I have started using them for hiking as well. This past week, we experienced a blizzard that dumped 12.5 inches of snow on my property. These poles helped me navigate the snow up very steep and long hill climbs up to the ridgelines. They reduced my fatigue from climbing in the snow as well as helped prevent me from slipping down the hills.

Who Needs These Poles?

The Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles are an investment for the runner who is serious about tackling vertical gain, long distances, and technical terrain. They are light enough to forget about when stowed and sturdy enough to rely on when you need them most.
