When the call for a challenging day on the trails comes, one destination in Southeast Michigan always answers. Pinckney Recreation Area.
While many runners, backpackers, and hikers flock to its famous neighbor, the Potawatomi Trail, the Crooked Lake Trail offers a shorter but equally rewarding option.
My friend and I decided to tackle this loop together. It was her first time visiting Pinckney Recreation Area, and the Crooked Lake Trail didn’t disappoint. This loop delivers everything you want in a Michigan trail. Constant ups and downs, beautiful lake views, and peaceful forest solitude.

The Crooked Lake Trail
We started our adventure at the Silver Lake parking area. There is plenty of parking and restrooms (seasonal and vault toilets). There are three trailheads here, making this a convenient access point for hiking in Pinckney Recreation Area.
We planned on hiking the entire 5-mile loop of the Crooked Lake Trail.
One of the things that makes this trail a true gem is how isolated it feels. The minute we set foot on the trail, it felt like we were deep within the woods, far away from civilization. It truly is a perfect escape into nature.

The trail itself is constantly engaging. The steep, rolling terrain changes frequently, keeping things interesting. And there are some pretty steep, long hills on this hike. True to Pinckney Recreation Area, there are also plenty of rocks and roots along the way.
The trail winds its way through diverse landscapes, too, with beautiful views. We passed by three inland lakes in total, my favorite being Crooked Lake. The crosses a steep wooden bridge with Pickerel Lake on one side and Crooked Lake on the other.
We loved our time spent on the Crooked Lake Trail. It was beautiful, easy to access, well-marked, and very peaceful.
Know Before You Go
While Pinckney Recreation Area is known for its incredible mountain biking trails (like the Potawatomi), the Crooked Lake Trail is strictly for foot traffic only. No bikes are allowed.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is mandatory for vehicle entry into the state recreation area. Be sure to purchase in advance if you don’t have one for convenience. You can also purchase one upon arrival.
Cell service may be limited. Do not rely solely on streaming apps or live GPS.
Overall
The Crooked Lake Trail may be overshadowed by the longer Potawatomi loop, but it stands alone as a truly rewarding challenge. If you are looking for five miles of beautiful, rolling terrain where you can disconnect, this is the trail for you.
