Location: Grand Ledge, Michigan
What it lacks for in mileage, Fitzgerald Park makes up for in beauty. Commonly referred to as “The Ledges”, Fitzgerald Park offers diverse terrain for all levels of runners and hikers.
I was introduced to the trails at Fitzgerald Park a few years ago when I participated in the first annual Timber Trails 5K. It was a scenic run with lots of challenges that kept the run interesting.
A couple of years later, I’ve returned to test out the trails once again. This 78-acre park offers a few miles of heavily trafficked, wooded trail. This includes views of the Grand River.
The trails offer a mix of steep hills and flat paths. Roots and rocks are common, requiring some technical work. Overall, it is an easy trail to run.
Some of the most scenic portion of trail follows along “The Ledges.” This nickname refers to ancient sedimentary rock formations that line the trail. Runners and hikers are comfortably sandwiched between the neat rock formations and pretty views of the Grand River.
Would I run here again? Probably. Overall the trail is fun and offers different variety in scenery than other trails in the area. It makes a great location for shorter runs but be prepared to not have the trails to yourself.
