Scattered south of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are a handful of state forest campgrounds. Like most of these campgrounds, Cusino offers some peaceful views, recreational opportunities, and solitude.
Cusino Lake State Forest Campground has 6 sites that are all first-come, first-serve. The sites are available for tents and small trailers. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from a well hand pump. The campground is well off the beaten path and is great for those looking for some isolation.
We stayed at site number 6 because it was right next to the woods and right on the lake. Our site was well shaded and offered a nice view of the sun setting over the lake. Unfortunately, when we arrived, there was a lot of trash left by the previous occupants.
Our first night at the campground we woke up to the sound of a wolf howling. We are used to hearing Coyotes when we camp but rarely do we hear wolves. It was a special treat.
Cusino is located between Manistique and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Because of it’s location, it’s perfect for spending a day in either location. We spent a morning in Manistique, visiting the lighthouse, Kitch-it-kipi, and Lake Michigan. In the afternoon, we hiked to Miner’s Beach in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
We liked it so much here that we ended up extending our trip and staying an extra night.
Getting to Cusino
To get to Cusino from Munising, head east on H-58 to Russ Lake Road, about 23 miles. Turn right onto Russ Lake Road and continue .8 miles. Here, Russ Lake turns slightly left and becomes Crooked Lake Rd. Continue for about 4 miles to reach the campground.
