If you’re looking for a campground in the Copper Harbor area, you’ll quickly find that your options are limited. Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is one of three options currently available for campers and in my opinion, has the best to offer for what you pay.
The park itself features a restored 1844 military outpost. The outpost was created in order to keep law, order, and protection for the mining community. It contains many buildings that show what life was like at the fort as well as hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, and a public boat launch on Lake Fanny Hooe.
The campground is broken into two loops; the west loop and the east loop. The east loop contains sites 1 through 81 and the west contains sites 1001 to 179, as well as the Lake Fanny Hooe Cabin and a Mini Cabin. Both loops have modern bathrooms with showers and electric hookups. The Fort Wilkins Foot Trail connects both campgrounds on its 4-mile loop.
While our site was spacious, the sites in the middle of the roads were quite cramped. With one or two reserved, it would be fine but if full, expect to be right next to your neighbors.
Overall this is a very nice modern campground.

Directions
To get to Fort Wilkins from Copper Harbor, following US-41 N out of town for about 0.9 miles. You will reach the west loop. Continue for about half a mile to reach the east loop.
