Silver Falls on Silver River isn’t the most impressive waterfall in the U.P but still has beauty and charm. There are two drops, upper and lower. The upper falls runs through an old dam. The lower falls was my favourite of the two. It has a pair of chutes with rapids in between.
The trail to Silver Falls is an easy five minute walk through thick, mossy forest. At the parking area, travel up stream (the trail is on the left) to see the upper falls. The lower falls is a short distance downstream with multiple trails leading to them.
Silver Falls is located east of Herman, Michigan. Head east out of Herman on Keranen Road. Take the first fork to the right on Summit Road. Follow this for a mile. Summit road turns south and Lahti Road goes east. Continue on Lahti Road until you reach the first left, approximately one mile. Follow this road for 1.5 miles. There is a rough parking area on the right and the trail to the river. If you reach the bridge crossing over Silver River, you’ve gone too far. You can walk downstream from the bridge to reach the upper falls if you’re looking for more adventure.
